Part one of the Podcast discussed the differences between creating a website from scratch and using a free online tool. What are some of the pros and cons of each option?
Scratch Pros - Personal creativity and preferred domain name
Cons - Can be expensive, takes more time
Free tool Pros - they have existing templates, some offer email accounts, easy to use, fast
to create
Cons - domain name may be unattractive, rules & limitations may apply as to use and
ownership of the website
Part two of the Podcast suggested five things that should be included on a classroom website, describe all five.
1. Syllabus of the class - any directions, project descriptions, worksheets, lessons
2. Useful links
3. Memos, policies
4. Grades, attendance (if allowed by the district and not already taken care of by the school/district)
5. Contact info at school - email, phone, office hours. Do not post any personal info.
Part three of the Podcast explained five steps to take when you start to create your own website, summarize all five.
1. Outline what you want your website to be about, make notes and figure out what you want your website to look like and contain
2. Find other sites you like and ask yourself why you like them - the layout? content? colors? and see if there are any aspects you might like to borrow.
3. Think about your users - does the site work for them, is it user-friendly and does it make sense.
4. Budget time for uploading/updating - set it aside each week to keep your site up to date as it may take longer at times depending on what you need to upload.
5. Determine how you will get your site up and running - what source will you use to do this? Will you buy software, use a free online site, will you have a website or a blog? Will you use a pagebuilder or FTP?
